What do you mean by “baseline specifications”?
Baseline specifications means that if your already owned computer meets or exceeds the specifications listed above, it will probably be able to run the software included in the NJIT software bundle during your first academic year. It is not the latest model, because we recognize some incoming students may have acquired a computer in the recent past and we would like you to be able to use it for a limited period of time. However, it will be necessary for you to upgrade it or acquire a new computer sometime after your first year of studies. The model that you will have an opportunity to purchase through the NJIT partner is a new model and will have newer components, intended to last up to four years. Models for students entering in fall 2012 are published in late spring 2012. Please note that Celeron, Duron, Atom, Centrino and Core Duo PCs are not acceptable. Students are encouraged to purchase a PC from the NJIT-authorized vendor at discounted prices since it includes a pre-loaded software image and on-campus support. PC hardware/software maintenance for computers not purchased through the NJIT-authorized vendor is the sole responsibility of the owner.
Does NJIT provide software support if I choose to use my own computer?
Academic Computing Services will make software available that is part of the NJIT software bundle. Depending on the nature of licensing with the software vendor, you will be able to download the software and install yourself, or borrow a CD-ROM from the library with installation instructions. The software distribution terms vary among software vendors. However, you are responsible for software installation and assuring that the drivers for your various components work properly with the software. Academic Computing Services staff will provide software support for students who decide to purchase a computer from the NJIT-authorized vendor and assist with questions if you are using recommended upgrade components (e.g. a video graphics card).
