A civil engineering degree can open your career up to a variety of paths, and the Master’s in Civil Engineering degree at New Jersey Institute of Technology looks specifically to help current engineers aspire to leadership positions within their own fields. This includes careers in the fields of transportation engineering, hydraulic/water resources engineering, environmental engineering, geo-environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, and construction engineering.

This program provides engineers with the management tools to competently lead teams on important projects. Entry-level engineers learn to actively position themselves for advancement, moving beyond designing, surveying, and analysis into careers as lead engineers and senior developers. The MSCE also facilitates licensure by allowing graduates to replace one of the three years of required experience needed to obtain the Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.

To become a civil engineer, professionals need to choose a discipline and train through a Masters in Civil Engineering from NJIT.

Civil engineers today face more challenges than simply solving equations for designing a building. They must also problem solve issues like pollution, shrinking energy resources, mass congestion on roads, and urban redevelopment. For those who aspire to become a civil engineer, it’s often as much about improvement as it is about innovation, as communities seek to better themselves with limited resources, both financially and environmentally speaking. Through a Masters in Civil Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), engineers can focus on this critical area of their field while on the path to become a more educated civil engineer.

Education, Training, and Certification
To become a civil engineer, you must start with an undergraduate degree in engineering. While some jobs are attainable with a Bachelor of Science or Math, the clearest road to this career is through a focused major in engineering. In many cases, it’s best to seek out degrees that are accredited by professional organizations and offer certification after graduation. If this is not the case, engineers will need to pass a certification exam following their degrees to be competitive for top jobs.
Many professionals choose to pursue further education in order to specialize in the branch that most interests them, in the form of a Master’s degree. To become a civil engineer, a Masters in Civil Engineering is an obvious route to take to acquire the knowledge, training, and skills you will need to work in this very needed and versatile field. Whether you pursue a Masters in Civil Engineering or opt for certification after your bachelors in engineering, you will need to meet the work experience requirements and examination requirements in order to become a certified Professional Engineer. A Masters of Civil Engineering can help make meeting these requirements simpler through a more direct and specialized form of education with your desired discipline.

FE/EIT Exam
The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) provides information about Professional Engineering licensure and administers the FE exam. Licensure varies per state. The following web site provides contact information and state requirements (under Licensure) for taking the exam: http://www.ncees.org/Licensing_boards.php.

Civil Engineering Sub-disciplines
Each branch of engineering has multiple sub-disciplines within itself, so part of the decision to become a civil engineering entails choosing the sub-discipline for which your expertise and talents are most suited. Below find brief definitions of each specialty within civil engineering:

• Coastal engineer: manages the coastal areas to protect towns and cities from flooding, erosion and other natural threats.
• Construction engineer: monitors construction projects in cities, including transportation, site development, and structural engineering.
• Transportation engineer: develops new transportation systems or supervises the construction and repair of transportation systems, and plans new roads or traffic patterns.
• Earthquake engineer: helps structural engineers design buildings to prevent damage during earthquakes.
• Environmental engineer: does the dirty work to make sure pollutants, chemicals, and waste are transported and disposed of safely. Also restores contaminated structures back to order.
• Geotechnical engineer: has a special expertise in rocks and soils to help lay solid foundations for structures to maintain building integrity.
• Water resources engineer: collects and manages water supplies by designing pipelines, canals, and drainage systems.
• Materials engineer: deals with the materials buildings are made up of, including concrete, metals, ceramics and polymers.
• Structural engineer: analyzes the structural integrity of buildings and projects, including bridges, towers, tunnels, and more.
